Introducing Avaan: Voice to Text and Notes for iPhone and Mac
Avaan is voice-to-text and Notes for iPhone and Mac. You speak, and you get usable text: a Note on your phone that you can ask questions about later, or dictation that lands in whatever Mac app you are writing in. Pro cloud transcription is the main experience on both. Local transcription on Mac is free, needs no account, and works offline.
What Avaan does
Notes and memories on iPhone
Record a Note and it syncs to your account with its transcript. Notes are for the things you would otherwise lose: an idea on a walk, a conversation you want to remember, a rambling thought you will sort out later.
Memories are a Pro feature and stay off until you turn them on. With memories on, you can:
- Ask your Notes a question, by voice or text, and get an answer that cites the Notes it came from.
- Get weekly reflections on what you have been saying.
- Have a voice conversation about what you said.
You stay in control. You can exclude a Note from memories, correct or forget a memory, or turn memories off. Note audio uploads only if you opt in.
Quick dictation on Mac
Press a global hotkey and dictate into the app in front of you. Modes, a Pro feature, format the text for where you are writing: an email in Mail, a casual line in Slack, clean text in a document. You can also import an audio file to transcribe it, and Pro adds speaker labels for conversations and custom vocabulary that syncs across your devices.
Cloud transcription on iPhone and Mac
Pro sends your speech to cloud models and returns text in real time. That is the main Avaan experience, and it is the better choice for noisy audio, accents, and specialist terms. Your results will vary with the recording, so try it on audio that matters to you.
Free local transcription on Mac
The Mac app also transcribes locally. It is free, needs no account, and works offline once the local model is downloaded. That audio stays on the Mac. It suits short dictation and clean recordings, and it keeps working when a Pro trial ends or a plan is cancelled. For the tradeoffs, see offline transcription on Mac.
Where your audio and text go
Avaan says plainly which path does what.
- Cloud transcription sends audio to speech providers. The subprocessors page lists them and the privacy policy explains the rest.
- Dictation history syncs metadata only, never transcript text or audio.
- Signed-in Notes sync their transcript text to your account. Note audio uploads only after you opt in.
- Local transcription on Mac keeps that audio on the Mac.
