Mac Dictation Not Working? Fixes to Try in Order

If Dictation is not working on your Mac, check these in order: Dictation is switched on in System Settings > Keyboard, the shortcut you are pressing is the one that is set, the right microphone is selected, and the app you are typing in has microphone access. Those four cover most cases. If Dictation starts but stops quickly, that is often by design, covered below.

The settings paths here come from Apple's Mac User Guide, read in October 2026. Menu names move a little between macOS versions. If you have not set Dictation up before, start with our setup guide for Dictation on Mac.

1. Confirm Dictation is on

Open Apple menu > System Settings, click Keyboard, and find Dictation. Make sure it is on. If you turned it on just now, click Enable when macOS asks.

2. Check the shortcut

In the same pane, look at the Shortcut pop-up menu. If you pressed a key combination that is not the one listed, nothing will happen. Choose Customize if you want to set your own. If your keyboard has a Microphone key, pressing and releasing it starts Dictation, but pressing and holding it activates Siri, which is a different feature.

You can also start Dictation from the menu bar with Edit > Start Dictation. If that works but the shortcut does not, the shortcut is the problem.

3. Check the microphone Dictation is using

Under Dictation, look at Microphone source. Automatic lets the Mac choose, which can pick a different device than you expect, such as a pair of headphones you are no longer wearing. Choose the microphone you are speaking into.

Then open System Settings > Sound > Input, select the same device, and speak. Apple's page describes an input volume slider; if your voice is too quiet, raise it. If you use an external microphone or a headset, unplug it and reconnect it.

4. Check microphone access

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure the switch is on for the app you are dictating into. Apple notes that the recording indicator in Control Center shows when the microphone is in use or was used recently, which helps you see whether anything is listening at all.

5. Look for a Voice Control conflict

Apple says that when Voice Control is on, standard Dictation is not available. If you or an accessibility setting turned Voice Control on, turn it off to use Dictation again.

6. Check language and region

Dictation is not available in every language or region, and features vary. Under Dictation, open Languages > Edit and check the language and region you selected match how you are speaking. Apple publishes a feature availability page for macOS if you need to confirm support.

7. Understand the 30-second stop

Apple says Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without detected speech, and that it has no time limit for how long you can talk otherwise. If it stops when you pause to think, start it again. If it stops while you are actively talking, the microphone is not hearing you well: revisit steps 3 and 4.

8. Check your connection

Whether Dictation sends audio to Apple depends on your setup. Apple says you can see which applies by reading the text under Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard. If yours is not processed on the device, a weak or blocked connection (some VPNs and restricted networks) can make it fail. Test with another network or turn off the VPN briefly.

9. Restart and update

If the settings all look right, turn Dictation off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Quit and reopen the app you are typing in. Restart the Mac. Install any pending macOS updates from System Settings, since Apple fixes bugs in point releases. We have not found an Apple-documented fix beyond these; be wary of guides that tell you to delete system cache folders in Terminal.

When to try a different tool

Sometimes Dictation works fine and the problem is fit: it stops when you pause, it will not format text for the app you are in, or it fails in a place you work often. A dictation app is a reasonable fallback.

Note what happens when you press the shortcut: nothing, a tone and then silence, or text that never appears. Nothing at all points to the shortcut or Voice Control.
