Avaan vs Wispr Flow: Mac and iPhone Dictation Compared

Avaan and Wispr Flow both turn speech into polished text in whatever app you are writing in. The practical difference is scope. Wispr Flow is a dictation product across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Avaan is voice-to-text and Notes for iPhone and Mac, with Pro cloud transcription at the centre, Notes and memories on iPhone, and a free local option on Mac. Dictation

Both apps are for speaking into whatever you are already writing. In Avaan you press a hotkey on Mac, and Pro cloud transcription returns the text. Modes (marketed as AI Modes) then format it for the app, such as an email in Mail or a casual line in Slack. Wispr Flow is a dictation product first, so check its site for how it formats text. It does work on Windows and Android, which Avaan does not.

If you want to judge them on output, I would not trust a vendor's accuracy claim, mine included. Dictate the same three paragraphs into each and compare what you would send. That takes ten minutes.

Free plans

Wispr Flow's free plan is capped by words per week. Avaan's free tier is different in kind: local transcription on Mac that needs no account and works offline, with the audio staying on the Mac. The trade is that local transcription is not the hosted Pro experience. Every Avaan account also gets a 7-day Pro trial with no card and up to 140 minutes of cloud transcription.

Price

Avaan Pro is $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, which includes 10 hours of cloud transcription each month (it resets monthly). After the trial or a cancelled plan, cloud features pause, your Notes stay readable, and local transcription on Mac stays free. Wispr Flow's page shows Pro at $15 per user per month or $12 on the annual plan, plus higher team tiers. Beyond dictation: Notes and files

Wispr Flow's page also lists a meeting Notetaker for Mac and Windows. Avaan's equivalent is different. On iPhone you record a Note that syncs to your account, and with memories on (Pro, off until you turn them on) you can Ask your Notes a question by voice or text and get an answer with citations. Weekly reflections and a voice conversation about what you said are included. You can exclude Notes, correct or forget a memory, or turn memories off, and Note audio uploads only if you opt in.

On Mac, Avaan transcribes imported audio files and, in Pro, labels speakers. For recordings of conversations, that is the closest match.

Where audio goes

Read each vendor's privacy page for where dictation audio goes. Avaan's cloud transcription uses the speech providers on the subprocessors page; dictation history syncs metadata only, never transcript text. Avaan's free local transcription on Mac keeps that audio on the Mac.

Which to choose

Choose Wispr Flow if you:

• work on Windows or Android as well as Mac and iPhone
• want a dictation tool and nothing else
• are happy with its plan limits and price

Choose Avaan if you:

• use an iPhone and a Mac, and want Notes on the iPhone alongside dictation on the Mac
• want to Ask your Notes questions and see cited answers
• want a free local fallback on Mac that works offline with no account
• want file transcription and speaker labels in the same app
