Avaan vs MacWhisper: Which Mac Transcription App Fits?

Avaan and MacWhisper both turn speech into text on a Mac, but they start from different places. MacWhisper grew out of file transcription and sells a one-time license. Avaan is built around Pro cloud transcription on iPhone and Mac, a quick-dictation hotkey, and Notes on iPhone, with free local transcription on Mac as a feature. The short comparison

MacWhisper's site does not say which of its features sit in the free version and which need Pro, so check its pricing section before you rely on a specific one.

Dictation

Both apps can put text into the app in front. In Avaan you press a global hotkey, speak, and text lands at the cursor. With Pro that audio goes to cloud transcription and comes back as clean text; without Pro, the free local transcription handles it on the Mac. Modes, which the site calls AI Modes, format the result for where you are writing, such as an email in Mail or a casual message in Slack.

MacWhisper now lists system-wide dictation with grammar improvement and prompts. If you used it only for files in the past, its dictation is worth a fresh look. I have not benchmarked either app head to head, so treat any claim that one is more accurate with suspicion, including mine.

File transcription

This is where MacWhisper started and it shows. You drag in audio or video, pick a model, and export. Its site lists subtitle export in SRT and VTT and automatic speaker recognition. If you cut video or deliver captions, that is a real reason to buy it.

Avaan transcribes imported audio on Mac too, and Pro adds speaker labels for conversations. What it adds beyond that is the rest of the workflow: the same account holds your Notes on iPhone, and with memories turned on (Pro, off until you enable it) you can Ask your Notes a question and get an answer with citations. Local, cloud, and where audio goes

Both apps can transcribe on your Mac. Avaan's free local transcription needs no account and works offline, and that audio stays on the Mac. Avaan's main path, though, is Pro cloud transcription, which sends audio to the speech providers on the subprocessors page. MacWhisper's site says you can use local models or cloud providers with your own API keys, so its cloud path depends on whichever provider you pick.

Price

MacWhisper's one-time license is simple and attractive if you transcribe a handful of files a month. Avaan Pro is a subscription: $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, with 10 hours of cloud transcription each month. Pick MacWhisper if you:

• dictate into email and chat and want the text formatted for each
• want Notes on iPhone you can Ask questions across
• want a free local option on Mac with no account to fall back on
